Many years ago when I still lived at home with my parents, my
mother introduced me to the art of cooking.
I was so exited when I was allowed to help in the kitchen and
watch as food was prepared – mostly for my mother’s many bridge
lunches. My mother also impressed me immensely when my father
brought unexpected guests home for dinner and she could turn out a
great, inviting, festive and flavorful meal from an almost empty
fridge! I realized then that I had a lot to learn and a lot to
live up to.
As with everyone else, these early experiences come in handy later
in life. Traveling extensively during my athletic career, cooking
for family and friends through the years, and the work with my
restaurant in Carefree, Arizona has resulted in the way I cook
today. |

About the Author
Pia Balling is originally from Denmark. Many people who have not
had a chance to visit the northern part of Europe think of Denmark
as a country with snow and mountains, while in fact its climate is
similar to Seattle, Washington but without any mountains.
Denmark is the land of a down-to-earth royal family, the Little
Mermaid, and friendly people who like to have a good time and
enjoy delicious food. The capital is wonderful Copenhagen; the
countryside is charming, green, beautiful and hilly. Denmark, a
Scandinavian country consisting of several islands and long
coastlines, has nice, broad fine sand beaches and is also the
motherland of the Vikings.
In her younger years, Pia traveled the tennis circuit just as the
ATP tour, and later the WTA tour, was being established. She was
the Danish national singles tennis champion for 10 straight years
and has seen and experienced all of Europe and most of the world
while representing Denmark on the court.
As a top athlete, Pia developed her own method of eating and
preparing food. She continued to develop her style of cooking with
extra virgin olive oil and wine, and in the last five years has
perfected and shared her creations with her patrons as an
accomplished restaurateur in Carefree, Arizona.
